How It Works – 24-Hour Teen Online Driver’s Ed

Earn your Texas driver’s license fast and hassle-free with our 24-hour Parent-Taught Online Course. Follow these simple steps:

STEP 1: Register Your Parent/Guardian as Instructor with TDLR
  • Any parent, guardian, grandparent, or foster parent can qualify as your instructor.

  • They must have a valid Texas driver’s license and a clean record (fewer than 6 points and no serious offenses).

  • Purchase the Parent Taught Program Guide from the TDLR for $20.

Register here as a Parent-Taught Instructor and Student

STEP 2: Enroll in the Course

Sign up for the Indrive Academy 24 HR Parent Taught Driver’s Ed Course.
After completing the first 6 hours, you’ll receive your permit qualification certificate instantly.

STEP 3: Get Your Learner’s Permit
  • Visit your local DPS for a vision test.

  • Bring your permit certificate and necessary documents.

STEP 4: Begin Behind-the-Wheel Training
  • Complete 44 hours of driving practice, including 10 hours at night.

  • 14 of those hours must be instructional: 7 driving and 7 observation.

  • Log 30 additional hours of practice (10 at night).

  • Finish all 44 hours using our course or a driving school.

STEP 5: Finish the Course
  • Complete all 12 modules.

  • Pass the final exam to receive your official certificate of completion.

STEP 6: Complete the Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD) Course
  • Required for Texans aged 16–24.

  • Free course/video from the Texas DPS.


Register for the ITTD Course

STEP 7: Take Your Driving Test
  • Must be at least 16 and hold a learner’s license for 6+ months.

  • Bring all required documents including course certificates.

  • Take your exam at a local DPS or an authorized driving school.

  • After passing, get your provisional Texas license — sometimes on the same day!

  • Visit your local DPS office for a vision test and get your learner’s license.
  • Bring required documents, including the 6-hour permit qualification certificate.
